Start of the school year: Visit to the environmental regeneration project on Monte da Madroa

We began the school year with a visit to the environmental values regeneration project on Monte da Madroa, carried out by the Communidade de Montes Veciñais en Man Común (CMVMC) of Teis.

The main objective of this initiative is to restore the native Galician forest, which had been invaded by black locust (Acacia melanoxylon), an exotic and invasive species. To achieve this, actions were taken to remove these acacia groves and to subsequently reforest the area with native broadleaf species, using sustainable methods—without herbicides—and promoting a strong bond between the local community and nature.

Environmental and social goals of the project:

        1. Restore degraded ecosystems.
        2. Conserve and promote biodiversity.
        3. Eliminate and control invasive exotic species.
        4. Promote environmental education and training.
        5. Raise awareness and disseminate knowledge about environmental values.
        6. Encourage environmental and intergenerational volunteering.
        7. Create alliances for the protection of natural heritage.

After this enriching visit, we resumed our work in the vegetable garden. After the summer, the garden beds were overgrown with weeds, so the first step was to clean and prepare the soil—an intense task in which the hoe and the sickle became our best allies.
