Kobe and Gianna during a basketball match

On January 26th, 2020, Kobe Bryant, his thirteen-year-old daughter Gianna and six more passengers  were travelling by helicopter when suddenly, the pilot lost control of the vehicle, and it crashed in a hill of Calabasas, California. There weren’t any survivors.

At first, the results of the investigation concluded that the accident was due to the fog. That day it was too foggy to fly, but they travelled anyway.

But a year later, newer investigations revealed that the accident was a human mistake. That day, it was too dangerous to fly by helicopter due to the bad weather and the fog, but Bryant needed to travel quickly to get to his daughter’s basketball tournament on time. The pilot, Ara Zobayan, was a professional with lots of years of experience

who had worked for Bryant before.

Moments before the crash, Zobayan communicated to flight controllers that the helicopter was ascending correctly. Later, the investigators discovered that really, the vehicle was descending at an ever-increasing speed, but the pilot couldn’t notice it because of the poor visibility produced by the fog, which made him disoriented. The vehicle continued descending until crashing to a hill.

Investigations also point out that there weren’t any mechanical failures, but the helicopter didn’t have the “black box” recording devices, which are compulsory to have in this type of vehicle. However, this machine wouldn’t have been useful to prevent the accident.

Countless Earthquakes Devastate Granada

The tremors caused no casualties, but a lot of damage

By Carmen Barahona and Marta Areal

January 30th, 2021

Firefighters and the police help the people who were affected.

In the province of Granada, a lot of earthquakes have created an atmosphere of terror and confusion around its population and caused hundreds of cracks in different buildings. In the past days, the earthquakes began to extend and multiply around the area. Their magnitude wasn’t very high except for five of them which were of magnitude 4 or higher. In Granada, these phenomena haven’t been detected on such a big scale since 1979, when they lasted for six months, and this is repeating in 2021. The population was very scared and didn’t know what to do in that situation. Most of them went outside for their security and waited for the earthquakes to stop.

“I’m very afraid, every day the ground moves and I don’t know what to do.”

– Santa Fe Resident

Manuela is an 81-year-old resident of Santa Fe, a village that is only 10 kilometres away from Granada, where the epicentre of some earthquakes has been located. The woman begins to cry after asking her how she is: “I’m very afraid, every day the ground moves and I don’t know what to do,” she says to us. Furthermore, in a nearby street, Pepi lives with her daughter. This housewife tells us that her family doesn’t yet dare to sleep on the upper floor of the house and they’re sleeping in the living room.

In Santa Fe and other affected localities there are “organized assistance offices” for the affected families. Only in Santa Fe 130 families presented their documents because of damages in their homes; nevertheless there are around 500 affected families in Artafe as explained by the mayors.

The Perseverance Rover Lands on Mars

The biggest and most sophisticated vehicle which was sent to Mars is now on its surface.

The Perseverance

The rover landed this past Thursday, February 18th with the purpose of finding microbial past life. It is 3 meters long and weighs 1,025 kilograms. With those measurements it’s the biggest robot which has landed on the red planet. Furthermore, it’s also the most expensive one; it costs 2,700 millions of dollars. As it was planned, at 9:55 pm Spanish time, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory confirmed the arrival of the rover which took off on July 30th.

One of the principal instruments of the Perseverance was fabricated by a group of Spanish investigators of the Astrobiology Centre. This instrument is the MEDA (Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer).

Its function is not only to measure the value of temperature and pressure, but also to study the dust particles in the Martian atmosphere.  Moreover, a team from the University of Valladolid has participated in building SuperCam, an object which uses a laser to identify the chemical composition of rocks and soil. It also has a pole with an incredible camera which can take high definition color photos of the planet.

The most important instrument of the rover is MOXIE and it is used to test how we can get oxygen from the Martian atmosphere. This  could be so useful if we think about living on Mars. However, the principal task of the Perseverance is to search traces of microbial past life. It will work with two other robots in this important job, which is going to answer a lot of questions we have been asking for ages. This event is going to be very important for human history.

Saímos do centro

As actividades complementarias que consisten en saír o centro educativo apenas tiveron cabida durante este curso. Pero cando as condicións melloraron puidemos empezar a viaxar co noso alumnado na procura dunha aprendizaxe diferente.

Excursión EF de orientación.

Conferencias

Días especiais

Xubilacións

Non todas as xubilacións puidemos celebralas como nos gustaría por mor das condicións da COVID-19, pero en canto as condicións melloraron nos despedimos axeitadamente das nosas profesoras.

Hábitos saudables no IES do Castro
